Hey there,
When you think “winter bugs,” you probably picture something out of a horror movie.
Today’s bug is the opposite.
Meet the snow flea—a tiny creature that doesn’t bite, doesn’t infest, doesn’t terrorize your pantry. It just hops around on the snow like it’s throwing a microscopic New Year’s Eve party.
Honestly? Iconic behavior.
Meet the snow flea (aka: the tiny optimist)
Snow fleas aren’t actually fleas. They’re springtails—tiny, ancient soil creatures that:
Live in leaf litter and soil, helping break down dead stuff
Love moisture (not your skin, not your pets)
Have a built-in spring-loaded tail (a furcula) they snap to launch themselves into the air
On warmer winter days, you can sometimes see them as little black “pepper” scattered on the snow, all jumping around like they’re at a micro New Year’s Eve party.
They’re also equipped with natural “antifreeze” proteins so they don’t freeze solid when everything else is tapping out for the season.
Why they’re good news (yes, really)
Outside, snow fleas usually mean your soil is alive, not dead and dried-out.
Inside, if you see lots of springtails around drains, basements, or soggy potted plants, it usually means too much moisture—a leak, dampness, or overwatering. They’re not the problem. They’re pointing to it.

Bug Wisdom
Not every bug is the enemy
You can be in a harsh season and still move
Quiet cleanup now makes growth easier later
Snow fleas prove there’s a lot happening under the surface, even when things look quiet. The same goes for real estate right now:
What Happens When $4.7T in Real Estate Debt Comes Due?
A wave of properties hit the market for up to 40% less than recent values. AARE is buying these income-producing buildings at a discount for its new REIT, which plans to pay at least 90% of its income to investors. And you can be one of them.

As the year wraps up and everyone screams “NEW YEAR, NEW YOU,” remember:
you don’t have to become a different person.
You can just be a little more like a snow flea:
Small moves.
Steady bounce.
Turning old, heavy stuff into something that feeds what’s next.
