Hey there,

You know that moment when your dog drags their butt across the rug like they’re starring in a very low-budget crime drama?

Or your cat suddenly starts coughing up something that is not a hairball, not quite a noodle, and absolutely not your problem emotionally?

Let’s talk about parasites in pets.

Because yes, we talk a lot about bugs in our bodies around here. But today, we’re turning the flashlight toward the furry roommates who sleep in our beds, lick our faces, eat mystery crumbs off the floor, and occasionally bring the outside world directly onto our pillows.

Cute? Yes.
Sterile? Absolutely not.

The usual suspects

Pets are basically tiny adventure vehicles. They sniff dirt, chase rodents, roll in grass, drink questionable puddle water, and investigate the world with their mouths like drunk little scientists.

Which means parasites can happen.

Not because you’re a bad pet parent. Because nature has never once respected boundaries.

The big ones most pet owners hear about are roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, giardia, fleas, ticks, and heartworms.

  • Roundworms can cause bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, and that classic pot-bellied look, especially in puppies and kittens.

  • Tapeworms often show up after fleas. If you’ve ever seen tiny rice-like pieces near your pet’s backside or bedding, congratulations, you have entered the tapeworm conversation.

  • Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes and are much more serious. These don’t hang out in the gut. They can affect the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, which is exactly why prevention matters.

  • Giardia is microscopic but dramatic. Think messy diarrhea, questionable smells, and the kind of cleanup that makes you stare silently at the wall afterward.

Nature really said: subscription model.

What to watch for

Sometimes parasites are obvious. Sometimes they are sneaky.

Watch for scooting, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss despite eating, a bloated belly, a dull coat, coughing, low energy, excessive licking, scratching, or anything that looks like rice grains or worms in stool.

And sometimes? There are no signs at all.

That’s the annoying part. Parasites can be very quiet until they are not. Basically, the toxic situationship of the animal kingdom.

This does not mean panic. It means pay attention.

Your pet’s health, your home, your yard, your shoes, your bedding, your floors, and your flea routine are all part of the same little ecosystem.

A dog with fleas can get tapeworms.
A cat hunting mice can pick up parasites.
A puppy can be born with worms.
A mosquito can carry heartworm.
A muddy paw can track in more than mud.

The same way your body whispers before it yells, your pet usually gives little clues too. A weird stool. A new itch. A belly that looks off. A behavior that makes you think, “Hmm. That’s new.”

Trust that.

You know your animal better than anyone.

Bug Wisdom

Parasites are a reminder that not everything draining energy is obvious.

Sometimes the thing causing chaos is tiny, hidden, and living off a system that’s trying its best.

So don’t panic. Pay attention.

Check the paws. Trust the scoot. Call the vet when something feels off.

Until next week, maybe don’t let the dog kiss your mouth today.
